AdvancedSet Up Google Performance Max Campaigns
Create Performance Max campaigns that use Google's AI to serve ads across Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, and Maps from a single campaign.
Instructions
Set Up Google Performance Max Campaigns
Step-by-step
- Create a new Performance Max campaign in Google Ads. Select your conversion goal.
- Set your budget and bidding strategy: 'Maximize Conversions' with an optional Target CPA.
- Create Asset Groups: each group needs text (headlines, descriptions), images (landscape and square), logos, and optionally video.
- Provide at least 5 headlines (up to 30 chars each), 5 long headlines (up to 90 chars), and 4 descriptions.
- Upload 3+ images in different aspect ratios: 1200x628 landscape, 1200x1200 square, and 960x1200 portrait.
- Add a video asset: if you don't have one, Google will auto-generate a video from your images (quality is mediocre, so custom is better).
- Set your audience signals: tell Google who your target audience is (custom segments, demographics, interests). This is a starting signal, not hard targeting.
- Add URL expansion rules: choose whether Google can send traffic to any page on your site or only specific landing pages.
- Launch and give the campaign 2-4 weeks to learn before making major changes — PMax needs data to optimize.
- Monitor asset performance: Google grades each asset as 'Best', 'Good', or 'Low'. Replace 'Low' performing assets regularly.
