Edit Video and Audio in Descript

Use Descript's text-based editor to edit video and audio content by editing the transcript — delete words to delete footage.

Instructions

Edit Video and Audio in Descript

Step-by-step

  1. Upload your video or audio file to Descript (descript.com). Descript will automatically transcribe it.
  2. Review the transcript: Descript displays the transcript alongside the video timeline. Editing the transcript edits the video.
  3. Remove filler words: Descript can automatically detect and remove 'um', 'uh', 'like', and other filler words. Use Edit > Remove Filler Words.
  4. Cut sections: select text in the transcript and delete it — the corresponding video/audio is removed. This is much faster than timeline editing.
  5. Rearrange sections: cut and paste paragraphs in the transcript to reorder your content.
  6. Add text titles and lower thirds: use Descript's template library to add professional overlays.
  7. Adjust audio levels: normalize audio so volume is consistent throughout. Add background music from Descript's library if needed.
  8. Use 'Studio Sound': Descript's AI enhancement that removes background noise and improves audio clarity.
  9. Export the final edit: choose your output format (MP4 for video, MP3/WAV for audio) and resolution.
  10. For collaborative editing, share the project with team members who can comment on or edit the transcript.
